Daughter of the Caribbean Sun

As a painter and sculptor, I have spent a lifetime working from the nude figure and in particular, the Afro-Caribbean nude. My Grenadian born wife Denise has modelled for the series of paintings and sculptures titled “Daughter of the Caribbean Sun”. The series follows Denise through the pregnancies of our two daughters (now nineteen and twenty) and continues to the present day.

Oh Ninja, where to begin… Every time I do yoga I discover something about my mind and body that I hadn’t noticed before. I love how much diversity exists in each individual’s practice. Some do it for exercise, some for spirituality, etc. but regardless, it seems to always be a learning experience. Personally, I find peace in the ritual of it: creating a space, creating a routine, finding my breath, finding balance, becoming grounded, becoming connected… I would love to explain every detail of this photo to you, the things I like and dislike, my thought process, the reasoning behind the books, just for the sake of conversation, but that would require an entire essay and I’ve written enough already. Besides, I think all the mystery fits with the shadowy grittiness of the photograph. Thank you for the great theme. Xoxo

My yoga practice really advanced by trying to touch my toes, I used to practice every morning in the shower till I could finally do it. And now like this lady I can reach beyond my finger tips and have my hands flat on the ground. Being able to so clearly see the results of my stretching was all the inspiration I need. Though long your write up is really nice, honest and revealing. But I absolutely love the lighting in this photo, the two little candles and the shadows along her thighs. and down her ribs. Great job lady seriously so impressive. Thanks so much for your submission, it’s an honor to share it.
